Truth About Computer Security Hysteria

Actually, it'd be the guy who wrote the software

A STORY IN the Wall Street Journal declared Dave Dittrich "the world's foremost expert on denial-of-service, or D.O.S., attacks." Wow! I cited Dr. Fred Cohen for years as the world's foremost authority. I can't believe how foolish I look now. My, how the mighty have fallen. Burn your 1986 Ph.D., Fred — you've been replaced by "a 38-year-old software engineer at the University of Washington whose job is to make sure the campus network runs smoothly." I probably wasted my time in 1997 when I attended one of Cohen's "distributed coordinated attack" lectures. (I mean no offense to Dittrich. Indeed, I hope an upcoming magazine profile lavishes me with praise. Yowza!)
