Truth About Computer Security Hysteria

Two words: 'nothing happened'

Rob Rosenberger, Vmyths co-founder
Friday, 14 January 2000 I RECEIVED INTERESTING email about my Y2K virus autopsy report. Vesselin Bontchev (FRISK) stated for the record: "for the period Dec 20, 1999 to Jan 10, 2000 we got fewer new viruses than in an average FIVE-DAY period of 1999!"
How many Y2K virus fearmongers does it take to shut down a military network?
None! "Only a computer security officer can make that decision."
ISPs wrote to say they offered full service over the new year. "We even didn't inform our customers" of the supposed threat, a German ISP proclaimed. "[Our clients] figured that we would have everything under control, as usual." A Fortune 250 computer security manager chimed in to say "my team treated [Y2K] like any other day in the life of a security professional." The mass hysteria did gnaw at him, however. He wondered "if I was missing something the last couple weeks when everyone was predicting the great virus & security infestation." A trusting CIO made all the difference for him. Sophos posted a Y2K virus update on their website. I can sum it up in two words: "nothing happened."
